During this time of year it’s something I see every weekend, but I honestly didn’t have a clue. At some point in time I’m sure it didn’t exist and then morphed into staple of summertime barbeques. If you think about it, technology can be the same way. Not so many years ago we didn’t talk about “virtualization” or “clouds”, but now you can’t say a breath without one or both words coming out. It’s this very trend which makes my job so interesting. The speed at which the technology morphs in the data management world can be breakneck. Helping customers navigate those shifting sands and solve short and long term goals is the value we provide. It’s our job to know which technology “coleslaw” is around the corner.

Just in case you were wondering… it comes from the Dutch "koolsalade”. Who knew slaw wasn’t a type of food. I guess it’s good to know someone who can help you understand the terminology and know when a cloud is truly a cloud or when slaw is just a made up word based on bad translation.

Nominal capacity, also know as the "advertised" capacity, is based on the standard base 10 numbers instead of the base 2 mathematics that disk drives use. In bae 10 one Megabyte equals one million bytes while one Gigabyte equals one billion bytes. This isn't too much of a problem with small numbers such as a Kilobyte, but each level of increase in the prefix also increased the total discrepancy of the actual capacity compared to the nominal capacity.
